Michigan State Long Range Championship16-17 September, 2006
The Michigan State Long Range Championship was held this past weekend at Camp Grayling NGB. Attendance was light, the weather was great, spirits were high, and the winds were their usual tricky. We had 2 competitors from Ohio join us – Carl Lemke, a Grayling regular, and Bryan Litz. Bryan won the overall aggregate, but not being a Michigan resident, was ineligible to win the title of State Long Range Champion. Nonetheless, he won the aggregate with a score of 1216-36x out of a possible 1250. Carl Lemke would have taken a solid 2nd place, but used a scope instead of iron sights on Saturday and was not eligible for awards for those matches. Still, he pushed Bryan hard right up to the end. Bill Hammers brought 2 policemen to try their hand at 1000 yd. prone shooting – Scott Snyder and Jason DeEulis, who turned in respectable scores for their first time out shooting F-class. We had a new face in our small crowd, a junior shooter, making her first trip to Camp Grayling as well as her first 1000 yd. match – Hanna Gaddie, the younger sister of Vikki Gaddie. Vikki had a wonderful day on Saturday and won all but 2 of the combined class matches for the weekend with her Palma rifle. The winner of the title of Michigan Long Range Champion goes to Renzo Tormen, with an aggregate score of 1182-30x – which goes to show that every now and then, a blind pig finds an acorn. This ends the 2006 MRPA Long Range season. Thanks to everyone who has come to Grayling to compete and volunteer their time and resources to help make the year’s events a success. Thanks also goes out to the EMT’s that provided medical coverage at our matches and were organized by Kevin McNamara. Finally, I would like to personally thank Mike Ross for taking over the Long Range Division and running the matches. His efforts have allowed me to compete for the full season - my first in several years. The 2007 schedule will be posted around the first of the New Year on the Organization’s web site. I hope everyone will take the time to attend and continue to support the Long Range Division. Next year, bring a friend and introduce them to the world of long range marksmanship. Warmest regards, Renzo Match Winner
